Week 12

iTunes University is a free site that many schools have decided to begin using. Many of the larger universities have already switched to this technology such as Penn State. Their iTunes website is https://itunes.psu.edu/. Here it is possible to select course materials lectures, seminars, athletic updates, and other valuable information related to the University.
As a student, this technology would be very valuable to me. I am not the perfect student and due to events, I have to miss class. With iTunes, the teacher could upload lectures from the class and the student could then download it at home or anywhere that they had access. This way, students would not have to rely on other students to give them notes for the missed class time. Many times when I get information from a student I do not completely understand missed assignments because they cannot explain the instructions that the teacher gave. With iTunes, these difficulties could vanish.
As a teacher, I feel iTunes would be a great way to look up new information for the classroom. I am a history major and there are so many documentaries, and amazing scholars that have so much more knowledge in specific fields. I could assign my students to go home and listen to some of these interviews/documentaries/lectures from others, and then the next day in class we could discuss them. The use of the technology would be a lesson in itself as well. We live in a society today that requires the knowledge of computers. Using iTunes would further any knowledge that they had with technology and they can carry that with them forever. The more people that are taught about the technology that we have the better because they will move on to educate others.

week 11

iPods are found everywhere these days. They are even popping up in schools and universities everywhere for educational purposes. Foreign language and music lessons are being taught more and more with this device. It's portability and digital content storage make it a great educational tool. Duke University incorporated iPod use for brief descriptions of selected courses. the recording capabilities generated a high level of student and teacher interest and was the most used feature for academic purposes. the academic uses of an iPod at Duke fell into five major categories which include course content dissemination tool, classroom recording tool, field recording tool, study support tool, and file storage and transfer.
The benefits of the iPod are numerous. So many students complain about the number of items they need to bring to class. The iPod reduces the amount of physical materials needed. It also reduces the dependence on lab or library locations and hours. It also enhances the support for individual learning preferences and needs. Even though the iPod has many advantages there are still some barriers. Two of these barriers are that some recordings aren't sufficient quality for use in some academic contexts and many teachers and students lack the knowledge of iPod functionality.

Week 10

Dr. Alice Christie is retired but has given much to the education family. Part of her website is devoted to research online. Today researching online is almost mandatory. I know that I am on the computer constantly. This is a difficult task considering I don't have Internet access at my home. However, when it comes to research with a computer, it can be tough. there are so many sites that appear to be educational, but aren't. many children will choose to use google and simply use the first item that pops up. This site may or may not give correct information.
Dr. Christie's site gives an end to this problem because she list many educational sites,(such as Encarta, Awesome Library Encyclopedia etc..) which students can rely on. This is important to me as an educator because now I have a list of acceptable references that my future students can rely on.

Week 9

I am 22 years old, and I have been in school since I was 4 without any breaks. So, I have written many papers. Most of those papers were research papers. Reliable sources were a requirement in order to receive a good grade. My teachers were always sure to let us know that Wikipedia was not allowed to be one of our sources. I never knew why. I simply did as I was told, and stayed away from it. Now I know why. I was shocked to find out that anyone can edit the material that is found on this website. Much of it has been proven edited as well. Big companies have had a hand in this. If there is a posted article that reflects them negatively then they simply go in and change it. More than that, companies have completely deleted it all together. Or, perhaps a company has gone in and changed something about their opponent to make them look bad. Every time someone edits this website, they leave a digital fingerprint that can lead right back to the computer where the change was made. However, it is simple to simply walk to any Internet cafe, and make the change there.

If any information on Wikipedia can be changed, then I feel that none of its information can be trusted. Now I know why none of my teachers wanted this site used. Sure, there is most likely information that hasn't been tampered with, but would you want your students to come across the one article that is going to give them biased and incorrect information? Absolutely not.

Week 8

I chose to look at the best blog from May titled “Customer Service”. First, I am a server and I am really good at my job. I strive to do my best not only because I make more money, but also because I truly care about my customer’s needs. I agree with the writer when he said that people have become accustomed to “okay” or “bad” service. Not to brag or anything, but maybe that is why I get so many complements from my customers.
I have never thought of students as customers before. Now, it makes a lot of sense. They are there and you have a job, as a teacher, to give them what they need. I’m not saying the customer is always right. There are some who are impossible to please. So what are you supposed to do? Give-up? If you said give up then you’re in the wrong profession and need a new job. You’re not supposed to give up. You do whatever you can to help your customer get to the place they want. This, in my opinion, is how every teacher should feel about their students.

Week 7

I will have to admit that my computer course can be a pain. If I don’t understand something right away I get frustrated just like I always have with math. Luckily, I am going to be a history teacher, and I am done with math forever (I hope). However, technology is something I will never get away from. The Fischbowl man is correct when he says that being technologically illiterate is the same as not being able to read and write.
When it comes down to it there are certain things you must know how to do in order to teach. What if you began teaching a class without ever learning about organization? Your classroom would most likely be a mess. Technology can help with organization, and is also an amazing teaching tool. Power points and smart boards are being used more and more everyday. ACCESS is growing in popularity in our country as well. It requires technology to use if and therefore teachers must have the knowledge to make this tool effective.

Week 6

This blog is from a class of year four and five students from Nelson, New Zealand. They are using their blog to communicate with other people from around the would. They even include a map. When people come to their site, this map shows the class where they are from in the world. Students can click on this map and learn more about where the reader was from.

Kahurangi has a class blog in New Zealand as well. This class actually attends the same school as the one above. They include a map which shows where onlookers come from as well as Moturoa's blog. This blog is also used to inform readers about what the class is doing. It explains their activities and has many pictures of the kids performing their activities.

Week 5

http:///

Mrs. Putnam’s classroom blog is just one of many blogs being used by teachers across America. Mrs. Putnam teaches 5th grade as Salem Elementary School. Her blog gives a summary of what was learned in the class, and she also puts up homework assignments and the dates that the assignments are due. She also includes a section with all fifty states and their capitals. She gives positive feedback to children who did a great job on an activity on any particular day. Lastly, it is easy to contact her through this blog whether to give feedback or to ask a question.

http://web2.burke.k12.nc.us/blogs/jparker/

Mr. Parker’s classroom blog gives a summary of everything that was learned in class. He teaches every subject in his classroom and wants his children to really learn. He offers resources on his blog to students for gaining further knowledge on topics discussed in class. Homework assignments are stated for each day that he actually gives an assignment. There are also pictures of the projects that he and his students have done together as a class. Lastly, there are links so you can leave comments. These comments can be from either students or parents. Of course, you don’t have to leave a comment you can ask a question and Mr. Parker can easily comment back with an answer.

Week 4

When I first turned this video on, I had no idea what to expect because the instructions gave no explanation about it. It was a science video that rapped about gravity, a Higgs model, and about the LHC. To be honest, I am not a science fan. However, the further this video got along the more my head was bouncing around. I ended up enjoying the video, and I even remembered a little about it as I stated above. Had the video not been interesting, I would have had to watch it again.
It is true that most students have a subject that they hate. That subject may be hard for a student to grasp, and may be even more difficult for them to retain the information they must learn. However, by implementing fresh and fun ideas to the subject, it is possible to change that. To me, it is much easier to remember something when it is depicted in an interesting lesson.

Week 3

Alabama Connecting Classroom, Educators, and Students Statewide (ACCESS) is a program created to provide opportunities and options for Alabama public high school students to engage in Advanced Placement, elective, and other courses to which they may not other wise have access. ACCESS has many different options available including “Advance Diploma” courses, multimedia/technology tools to enhance instruction, and leverage existing resources and distance learning offerings. The goal is to utilize the 21st century equipment and incorporate it into everyday classrooms.
There are many resources available such as videoconferencing courses, teacher brochures, and parent and student brochures. Another important resource, which benefits students, is an Alabama High School Graduation Exam. Many low-income schools have limited course offerings for students and some cannot offer an Advanced Diploma. Therefore, the goal is to provide an equal access to high quality instruction to improve student achievement through distance learning opportunities.
ACCESS has many options for students and teachers. When trained properly with this program I intend to use it. I feel that it will be beneficial to all of my students. I especially think it will be helpful to those students who get bored in class because the workload, in their eyes, is too easy.

Week 2

ALEX, Alabama Learning Exchange, offers many different resources that can advance the way the a teacher works in their classroom. there are different fields of study in which a teacher can go to and get different questions for a topic to discuss in the classroom. Lesson plans can be found and made on this website as well. There are also web links to find annoted education web sites as well. Not only that there is unlimited teaching and learning tools, as well as best practices to use for your classroom. Many schools have a limited amount of courses offered. This a lot of times can be troublesome for AP students. This website offers ACCESS, which is a way for these students to take courses on-line which will further there education farther than what may be offered at their school.

It was surprising to me that a website such as this is offered. It has tons of information that will help me as a teacher. The fields of study will help me alone especially if I am stuck on what kind of questions to ask on a certain subject. Hopefully this website can make me more creative in the ways that I will teach and help keep my kids interested in the subject at hand.

Introduction to me!

Hi everyone..I am Kristina and I am 21 years old. I have lived in Mobile for the majority of my life. This is my fifth year at the University of South Alabama, and I am studying to be a high school history teacher. The six year plan is a long hard road just so you know. My advice is don't change your major after two years of school.

It was a big fight for my parents to get me to go to South. All I wanted to do was high-tail it out of here after I graduated high school. However, I am surprised how happy I have been here. I have had a great time, and the best part is I got to stay here and keep all of my friends.

I love to hang out with my friends. I actually live with my best friend Chris and his mom. However, we are in the process of finding a place of our own. He is convinced she is satan so he says we must get out before she devours our souls.....blah blah..she is an absolute wonderful woman (as is my mom!). He is my wingman. We are constantly going out and he takes care of me when I have had one too many and vica versa.

I work all of the time if possible. I live a certain lifestyle and I do not wish to give it up. Because I work so hard I was able to by a brand new car last year. I have a scion tc (the sleek sexy one, not the box ;). However, I would just like to add that I have had car trouble with every car I have ever had. So naturally when I got my beautiful new one, I felt relieved. No more car trouble right?? Noo Noo Noo..that wouldn't be right for me. I had the car for 7 months and 3(yeah I said 3) deer hit me and my car was almost totaled. I got it fixed and lemme tell you what happened when I walked outside yesterday to go get school books. Someone shattered my back window. So if you have any leads....I'm a mad woman on the loose (or so the neighbors think after all my cussing). I'm not joking... Its cool. My best friend Chris bought a new Toyota Tacoma and guess what I am driving for the week while he drives his old car!! I always told him I would end up driving it eventually. Just goes show that best friends are awesome!
